The School of Philosophy, Cambridge have organised a new series of monthly talks and discussions in Central Park.

Whilst not specifically Christian, there have been many great Christian Philosophers so these talks could provide some interesting and challenging opportunities for debate.

The Buttercross Tearooms provide a friendly and comfortable surrounding for the meetings which start at 10am and finish at around noon with a break halfway. The park is just 10 minutes walk from the town centre and parking is free in Park Crescent, PE1 4DY

Summer Recital: Steven Grahl & Friends
Steven Grahl is Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral, Principal Conductor of the Guildford Chamber Choir, and Musical Director of Peterborough Choral Society. He is active as a choral director, organ recitalist and accompanist, teacher, and composer and arranger.

For this performance he joins fellow musicians to play some mellow jazz standards. Perfect for a summer lunchtime.

Chris is a creative story teller, artist, author and poet who founded The Light Project a growing network of people across the UK who love to reveal Jesus to those who have yet to make any sense of him. His latest book ‘Philip’ is a novel about the evangelist from the book of Acts.

He is former President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and is part of Cambourne Church, a Local Ecumenical Partnership Church.

Chris currently serves as the city centre chaplain in Peterborough, and trains others in community outreach all over the UK.

Chris has been regularly painting in cafes and pubs for the last 4 years. He has painted hundreds of pictures to bring good news in powerful ways. As well as sharing the theory of how and why he uses the arts in evangelism Chris will give hands on help in guiding you to produce some pictures for those who need hope.

Come and be inspired as well as have a go at painting/ making/ drawing and practice hearing the voice of God.

All materials as well as lunch will be provided.

Please use Sand Road to park and then take then take the short walk to Lighthouse cafe.

Crafty Capers
Lots of churches have a ‘knit and natter’ group. Westgate New Church have decided to start a group but wanted to encourage people to bring any craft they enjoy and spend an afternoon chatting, drinking tea and completing crafty projects. They have called their meeting ‘Crafty Capers’.

Two familiar faces return to perform in our series of free Wednesday lunchtime recitals: Katie Schofield, mezzo-soprano and former Cathedral Lay Clerk, and Andrew Reid, former Director of Music at the Cathedral.

Summer Recital: Katie Schofield and Andrew Reid
Katie studied law at Cambridge University before turning to a life of itinerant singing. She sings with groups including Tenebrae, BBC Singers, Monteverdi Choir, Polyphony, Cardinall’s Musick, Tallis Scholars, Dunedin Consort and Stile Antico. She spent three years as a Lay Clerk in the choir of Peterborough Cathedral.

Andrew Reid was Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral for eight years before leaving in 2012 to become Director of the Royal School of Church Music. He will shortly be joining Harrison and Harrison organ builders as their Managing Director.

Guitarist, Victoria Green and Stuart Nicholson, organist, offer a varied Wednesday lunchtime music, from baroque to a contemporary fandango.

Summer Recital: Victoria Green, guitar and Stuart Nicholson, organ
Victoria Green has a busy and varied career as both solo and chamber music performer, having given recitals at venues including the cathedrals of Peterborough, Birmingham and Edinburgh and numerous concerto performances including Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjeuz.

Stuart Nicholson is Organist and Master of Choristers at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

Their varied recital programme includes a baroque concerto, a contemporary fandango, Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns and part of Shostakovich’s catchy Jazz Suite No 1.

The walks are a joint venture between The Alzheimer’s Society, the Friends of Central Park, Amey and Peterborough City Council, facilitated by Park Ward Labour councillors Richard Ferris and John Shearman.

When: 3rd Thursday of the month from March - August
Time: Meet at Buttercross Cafe at 11am

Cllr Ferris said: “The walks are intended for those living with dementia and their carers, and will be leisurely strolls through the park, finishing back at the café for a well earned cuppa and cake no later than 12.30.”

This guided outdoor tour looks at the historic buildings in the Precincts and visits the Deanery Garden, which is rarely open to the public. Within the garden is the site of an 11th century mott and bailey fortress.

Precincts and Deanery Garden Tour
The Precincts tour starts outside the West Front and tells the history of the Becket Chapel, the Norman Arch leading to Cathedral Square with King’s Lodging above it, and the Knights’ Chamber. The guide will also talk about the 18th century Western Range and the neighbouring row of 19th century town houses built by J.L. Pearson, the architect who restored the Cathedral Tower, Quire, Presbytery, and High Altar.

After that the tour will move to Robert Kirkton’s Arch leading into the Deanery area, and from there up the north side of the Cathedral showing the former site of the Lady Chapel. Then it will enter the Victorian Deanery Garden and take a look at Tout Hill, the site of the 11th century castle. The tour then goes around to the east side of the Cathedral to see the exterior of the New Building, before looking at the remains of Infirmerer’s Hall. The group will visit Almoner’s Hall and return to the West Front via the site of the former monastic Refectory, Dormitory and Chapter House. En route the tour will see Laurel Court and the Cloisters.

Throughout the tour the guide will tell the story of these remarkable buildings, many of which which have stood on this site for centuries.

St Mary's Church pop up picnic is taking place again this year and everyone is invited!

Everyone is welcome and people will be assembling from 1pm under the old oak tree just inside the entrance opposite the Regional College.

All you need is a chair or rug and a picnic and you’re free to share that too.

Three of the London-based Camilli String Quartet will be playing Haydn, de Beriot, and Scottish Folk Music as part of our Wednesday lunchtime series.

Summer Recital: Camilli String Trio
The Camilli String Quartet was formed while studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, won the Trinity Laban John Barbirolli Competition 2015, and were awarded a place on the Richard Carne Chamber Mentorship Scheme.

The quartet is made up of experienced chamber and solo musicians who held individual scholarships at Trinity Laban. They have performed at venues around the UK including Kensington Palace, the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, Farnham Maltings, the Madhurst Arts Festival, Benslow Music Trust, The Citadel Aberdeen, and Wigmore Hall, and recently toured Scotland.

On his journey he meets the effervescent Ratty who shows him the wonders of picnics and messing about on the river, Badger, the wise old sage of the woods and Toad of toad hall, whose exploits cause all manner of mischief and upheaval.

When the Weasels take over Toad Hall it's up to Mole and Ratty, Badger and Toad to retake control. With inventive staging, original songs and magical storytelling we invite audiences to enjoy this classic tale of adventure, friendship and picnics in Boxtree Production's unique and energetic way!

Bring a picnic and a blanket or a low backed chair to soak up the atmosphere of this classic story in the cloisters of the magnificent Peterborough Cathedral.

The club runs from 31st July to 11th August, and again from 14th August to 25th August.

9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Prices
£25 per child per day, or £100 for the week. Sibling discounts available.
