We often lack the place to have those important conversations with others where we can speak about our experience of God and prayer and where we are given both support and challenge as we work out what it might mean day by day, to hear the voice of Christ say ‘Come follow me’.

Participants in this short programme will not be ‘taught’ about prayer, neither simply ‘explore’ prayer, but will pray and with guidance, learn from their own experience and reflections. In this way, what we do will be largely experiential.

Travelling in will include:

broadening and deepening our experience of prayer (i.e. how we relate to/meet God)
exploring the way in which that experience affects how we engage with the world around us
enabling reflection on those experiences with others
providing the basic skills and tools necessary to continue meeting within a similar small group should participants so choose.

Themes for the sessions will be:

Session 1. Praying with the breath
Session 2. Praying with the Bible
Session 3. Praying with silence
Session 4. Praying with icons
Session 5. Praying with images of God
Session 6. What next?

Some basic material will be provided at the end of each session which we hope will be encourage participants to continue to pray and reflect throughout the following month and become the basis from which they begin to build up their own resources to explore further.

Our hope is that this might be a way of providing spiritual companionship for people, other than formal spiritual direction.

Who is it for?

The programme is for anyone who is interested, ordained or lay, but we do need commitment from people to be present at the sessions. Working in this way means that for the group to learn as well as it can, a steady membership is required.

Places will be limited to a maximum of 16 people.

The programme will be facilitated by Sr Rachel Overton and Rev John Rackley. Sr Rachel is the Bishop’s advisor for spirituality for the diocese of Peterborough and has experience of leading retreats, spiritualmdirection and teaching. Rev John Rackley is a Baptist minister and a spiritual director who has taught on prayer throughout his ministry.
